Nestled in the heart of North Carolina’s Research Triangle, the delightful small town of Apex offers visitors a charming escape from the bustling cities of Cary, Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill. With the motto “The Peak of Good Living“, Apex combines modern conveniences with historic charm, making it the perfect destination for a weekend getaway or a peaceful retreat.
In this guide, I’ll share my personal recommendations for exploring Apex, from its quaint downtown district to its beautiful parks and natural surroundings.
Downtown Apex: A Historic Treasure
A visit to Apex wouldn’t be complete without a stroll through its picturesque downtown area, which has been lovingly maintained and preserved. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Apex’s downtown boasts beautifully restored buildings, a farmer’s market, and a plethora of unique shops and delicious eateries.
Salem Street
The heart of downtown Apex, Salem Street is lined with antique stores, art galleries, and gift shops where you can find one-of-a-kind treasures. Be sure to stop by the Apex Gallery for a selection of local art, and browse the shelves at All Booked Up for a new favorite read.
Local Eats
Treat your taste buds to the wide variety of cuisines available in Apex. Some of my favorites include Anna’s Pizzeria for a classic slice, The Provincial for farm-to-table fare, and Taco Loco for authentic Mexican cuisine. Don’t forget to end your meal with a scoop of homemade ice cream from S&T’s Soda Shoppe.
Events & Festivals
Throughout the year, downtown Apex comes alive with various events, such as the popular Peak Fest and the seasonal Apex Farmer’s Market. Check the town’s events calendar to see what’s happening during your visit.
Outdoor Adventures: Parks and Greenways
Apex is home to a variety of parks and greenways, offering ample opportunities for outdoor recreation. Enjoy a leisurely walk, a family picnic, or a challenging bike ride through the town’s beautiful natural surroundings.

Apex Community Park
This expansive park features a large lake, sports fields, playgrounds, and a variety of walking and biking trails. Rent a paddle-boat or kayak to explore the lake, or simply relax by the water with a good book.
American Tobacco Trail
A former railroad line turned multi-use trail, the American Tobacco Trail extends over 22 miles from Apex to Durham. The trail is perfect for biking, walking, or running, and offers a pleasant, tree-lined escape from the city.
Jordan Lake State Recreation Area
Just a short drive from Apex, Jordan Lake offers a multitude of outdoor activities, including boating, fishing, swimming, and hiking.
Be sure to keep an eye out for the resident bald eagles that call the area home.
Great Location!
With its centralized location and close proximity to NC US1, Apex serves as an ideal base for exploring the neighboring cities of Raleigh, Cary, and Holly Springs.
